rosy barb (Puntius conchonius)
Rosy barb is the most common fish which u often see in local fish sellers shops.they belong to the minnow family. These are found allover the Indian subcontinent and are also easiest fish to catch in abundance.
their main habitat being river systems like cuvery, krishna etc.
Discription:-
wild:- they are less color full as their tank breed cousins .they have a circular spot at the tail end.the males have bright red and pink body and green on their backs. The males show their beautiful colors only during breeding.
farm bred :-they are mostly of golden color ,males show bright red shades on heir body with long fins these are achieved by selective breeding.
Conditions:-their natural habitat has a ph of 6 to 8, a water hardness of 5-19 dGH , and temperature rage is of 64-72F (18-22C). these are pretty hardy fish and can be a good beginners fish.they can be agood community tank mates.
Food:-these guys eat pretty much every thing rite from algae to pellets insects, mosquitoes larvae .
Breeding:-Rosy barbs breed pretty much every day as far as i now because my barbs do,only when they are in schooling of 4 pairs minimum.they spawn only in the mornings when the sun starts to raise,by spraying their fertilized eggs over the aquatic vegetation .the eggs often get eaten which is a natural behavior of the barbs .the eggs will hatch in 24 hrs but the fry are not free swimming ,these fry still carry their egg sacks ,they only start free swimming after a week.
any comments and suggestions are most welcome.
